Information about Balchik

The Thracians were the first settlers of the lands on which the present town is situated. Thracian objects over 2000 years old have been discovered (cups, metal vessels, adornments, arms).
In the Middle Ages the fortress Krunoi rose at that place, which defended the coast from naval invasions.
Balchik is mainly famous for its Botanical garden, which holds unique plants. Certainly the Botanical garden is best supplemented by the architectural and park ensemble of the Palace, which used to be the Residence of the Romanian Queen Maria at the beginning of the 20th century. The Botanical Garden and the Palace are by all means Balchik’s visiting card.
The town mainly develops tourism in the summer season. The traditional visitors come usually from Russia, Bulgaria and fewer from the Czech Republic, Poland and the Nordic countries. Hotel and restaurant businesses are the main source of income for the local population.
The yacht harbour offers places to berth for 60 yachts. Yacht tourism, offering various voyages in the Northern Black Sea, is developed. Picnics, fishing, bathing in the sea, fights with pirate ships, and romantic night cruises are organized. In the neighbourhood of the town of Balchik two golf courses are being built, one of which has been designed by the world famous golf player Ian Usnam. The first golf players are expected to come in the summer of 2006.
