Information about Sozopol

Sozopol
Sozopol is located 35 km to the south of Bourgas, on a picturesque rocky peninsula, and it is one of the most ancient towns on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. In close vicinity are the camping resorts of Kavatsi, Zlatna Ribka /Goldfish/, and Veselie /Joy/. The town is a municipal centre with about 4 200 people, as at 2002, and a favourite seaside resort with developed tourism and preserved traditions.

The lands of the present town have been inhabited since ancient times, while it has existed as a village since 2600 years and the Thracians are considered to be its first inhabitants.   Sozopol became a Greek colony in the 7th century BC under the name of Apollonia – Pontica. The things that have been discovered at the bottom of the sea such as various objects, earthen jars, ceramic vessels, and anchors, indicate the importance of the town in the antiquity as well as its exceptional cultural and commercial development. The town was destroyed in 72 by a Roman legion and it managed to reinstate its former glory only at the beginning of the 4th century. In 1453 it was conquered by the Ottoman Turks and it gradually fell into decay, turning into a poor fishing and wine-growing village. Sozopol flourished during the National Revival at the end of 18th century when rich houses were built, some of which have been preserved even nowadays.
