Bulgaria takes Ninth Place as a Popular Tourist Destination for Germans

The GIATA-Ranking Agency has ranked Bulgaria ninth among Germany's most popular tourist destinations. The ranking is based on analysis of the activity of 16 000 travel agencies in Germany, offering reservations at 60 000 hotels around the world.

The country ranking index has improved from 1.7 in March, 2007, to 2.2 in March, 2008.

Spain is the top destination for German tourists, followed by its island Majorca, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Tunisia, and Thailand.

Bulgaria is the only country from the former Soviet Block to be placed among the top ten in the GIATA ranking. Despite that, not even one of the country’s Black Sea resorts is among the top ten sea the resorts most visited by Germans.

The ranking was announced by the Bulgarian Union of Tourism Investors. Representatives of the Union have expressed the opinion that the Black Sea resorts have not been placed among the top ten due to the lack of advertising material about Bulgaria on the German market and a very modest advertising campaign. Bulgarian tourism needs much more advertising resources in order to improve the country’s image in Germany and make itself a top tourist destination.

Charter flights to Bulgaria from thirty airports in Germany begin on April 29 and end on October 27 while the main tour operators dealing with organized vacations of German citizens in Bulgaria are TUI, Thomas Cook-Neckermann, ITS Koeln, and Altours.
